Where Can I Move Without a Job Offer? (Self-Sponsored Visas)

The realistic self-sponsored immigration paths in 2026 are: Canada Express Entry (FSW), Australia Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent), US EB-1A and EB-2 NIW (top-tier records), UK Global Talent (endorsement-based), UK High Potential Individual (recent grads of top universities), New Zealand Skilled Migrant, and various startup / investor visas. None require a job offer.

Who this applies to

You want to immigrate but don't have a job offer in the destination country. This guide covers paths where you self-sponsor or qualify on your own credentials β€” no employer required.

The points-based PR routes

Canada Express Entry

The CRS scores you out of 1,200 across age, education, language, experience, and additional factors. General draw cutoffs in 2026 have ranged 510-540; category-based draws (STEM, healthcare, French, trades, transport) have cutoffs as low as 410-480.

No job offer needed. A job offer adds 50 points. A Provincial Nominee Program nomination adds 600 points (effectively a guarantee).

Australia Subclass 189

Points-tested. Minimum 65, actual draw cutoffs in 2026 typically 80-95+. Your occupation must be on the MLTSSL. Skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority is mandatory.

No job offer needed. No state nomination needed (that's Subclass 190).

New Zealand Skilled Migrant

Reformed in 2023 to a 6-points threshold based on qualifications, occupational registration, and income. Generally requires a job offer in many cases for fastest processing, but qualification-based pathways exist.

The criteria-based US routes

EB-1A β€” Extraordinary Ability

Self-petition. Requires 3 of 10 criteria plus sustained national / international acclaim. The bar is genuinely high β€” designed for "the small percentage at the very top of the field." Typical successful petitioners have multiple major awards, sustained press, citations, leading roles.

For ROW nationals, end-to-end timeline is 12-24 months. For India-born applicants, the priority date wait adds 1-3 years.

EB-2 NIW β€” National Interest Waiver

Self-petition. Requires advanced degree (master's+) or exceptional ability, plus the three Matter-of-Dhanasar prongs: substantial merit and national importance, well-positioned to advance, waiver benefits the US.

Much more accessible than EB-1A. STEM fields received favourable 2022 guidance and have a measurable tailwind.

EB-5 β€” Immigrant Investor

Invest $800k (TEA / rural / infrastructure) or $1.05M (standard) in a US business that creates 10+ jobs. Self-sponsored. No employer or job offer required. Substantial capital and "source of funds" diligence required.

The endorsement-based UK routes

Global Talent

Self-sponsored. Endorsed by one of: Tech Nation (digital tech), Royal Society (natural / medical sciences), Royal Academy of Engineering, British Academy (humanities), UKRI (research), Arts Council England (arts / culture).

Endorsement criteria vary by body but typically require evidence of recognition, contribution, and continued impact. Tech Nation evaluates technical or commercial contribution.

After endorsement, visa is granted in 3 weeks. 3 or 5 years to ILR depending on track.

High Potential Individual (HPI)

For recent graduates (within last 5 years) of universities on the UK's eligible list (updated annually; includes top US, European, and Asian universities). No sponsor, no endorsement.

2-year visa (3 if PhD). Doesn't lead directly to ILR but lets you live and work in the UK while you build a longer-term path (Skilled Worker, Global Talent, Innovator Founder).

Founder routes (self-sponsored)

Canada Start-up Visa

Get a Designated Organization (angel group, VC, or business incubator) to back your venture. Co-founders allowed (up to 5). PR-from-day-one programme. Typical timeline 12-24 months.

UK Innovator Founder

Get endorsed by an approved body for your innovative, viable, scalable business idea. Β£50k+ investment funds and an endorsement letter required. 3-year visa, then ILR.

US International Entrepreneur Parole

For founders with funded startups (qualifying investment $311k+ or government grants $124k+ as of 2026), 10%+ ownership, and a central role. Parole grants 30 months + 30-month extension.

US E-2 Treaty Investor

Treaty country nationals invest $100k+ in a US business and run it. Renewable indefinitely. Not a green card, but a self-sponsored work visa.

Common mistakes

Assuming "no job offer" means "no points / requirements." Most self-sponsored paths still have hard eligibility floors (degree, experience, language, capital, or evidence). The job offer is just one removed factor.

Filing US EB-1A with a thin record. EB-1A approval rates hover at 60-70%. Borderline filings risk denial β€” a permanent black mark. Most candidates benefit from O-1A first, then EB-1A later.

Missing the UK HPI window. HPI requires graduation within the last 5 years from an eligible university. Recent grads can use it instantly. Mid-career applicants from those universities are out of luck unless they re-qualify.

Ignoring category-based draws. Canada's STEM, healthcare, French, and trades draws are dramatically easier than general draws. Profile your NOC and target the right category.

Underestimating self-petition timelines. "Self-sponsored" doesn't mean "fast." EB-2 NIW can take 24 months end-to-end for non-backlogged countries. Canadian Start-up Visa can take 18-24 months for the Designated Organization step alone.

How to choose

Start with the points calculators

Canada CRS and Australia points are calculable in minutes. If your CRS is 500+ or your Australia points are 90+, those are your fastest paths.

Audit your record for criteria-based paths

For US EB-1A: do you have 3-4 of 10 criteria met with strong evidence? For US EB-2 NIW: do you have a master's+ and a credible national-importance framing?

Check endorsement eligibility for UK

Tech Nation endorsement is broader than most people assume. Open source contributions, technical leadership, and commercial impact all count.

Map capital to investor paths

E-2 ($100k+, treaty country), Canada Start-up Visa ($75k-$200k typical), EB-5 ($800k-$1.05M), UK Innovator Founder (Β£50k+ + endorsement) β€” match your capital to the right product.

FAQ

Can I have multiple self-sponsored applications open at once?

Yes. Canada Express Entry, Australia 189, UK Global Talent, and US EB-2 NIW are all independent processes. Filing one doesn't preclude another.

Do self-sponsored paths give better odds than employer paths?

For top profiles, yes β€” you control the timeline and aren't dependent on H-1B lottery or PERM. For generalists, employer paths are often the only realistic route in the US, while Canada / Australia points-based paths beat both.

What if I get a job offer mid-process?

A job offer doesn't hurt any of the above paths (it adds points in Canada / Australia). You can pivot between strategies.

Can I work for any employer with self-sponsored PR?

Yes β€” once you have PR (Canada, Australia, New Zealand) or a green card (US), you can work for any employer or yourself.

How long do I have to live in the country?

PR holders generally need to maintain residency (e.g., Canada: 730 days in any 5-year period; Australia: similar). For US green cards, you can be outside the US for up to a year without a re-entry permit; re-entry permits can extend that.
