Do I Qualify for Canada Express Entry? (CRS Self-Check)

You qualify for Canada Express Entry if you meet the eligibility minimums for one of the three federal programs (FSW, FST, CEC) and your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score is high enough to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Recent CRS cutoffs in 2026 have ranged from roughly 470 to 540, depending on the draw type. Maximum CRS is 1,200.

Who this applies to

You are considering Canadian permanent residency via Express Entry. This guide walks through the eligibility floors and how to estimate where you actually land on the CRS β€” so you can self-check whether you're competitive without filling in the official tool blind.

The three Express Entry programs

ProgramForMinimum requirements
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)Foreign workers with skilled experience1+ year continuous skilled work, language CLB 7, education, 67/100 on FSW grid
Federal Skilled Trades (FST)Skilled trades workers2 years in last 5 in a skilled trade, language CLB 5/4, job offer or certificate of qualification
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)Foreign workers with Canadian experience1+ year skilled work in Canada in last 3 years, language CLB 7/5

You only need to qualify for one program to enter the pool.

How CRS scoring works

CRS is out of 1,200 points across four categories:

CategoryMax pointsNotes
Core human capital (no spouse)500Age, education, language, Canadian work experience
Spouse factors (if applicable)40Spouse's education, language, Canadian experience
Skill transferability100Combinations of education + experience + language
Additional points600Provincial nomination (600), job offer (50-200), Canadian study, French, sibling in Canada

The two biggest levers are:

  • Provincial Nomination Program (PNP): +600 CRS points β€” effectively guarantees an ITA
  • French language proficiency: Up to +50 points for strong French (NCLC 7+) plus bonus French-only draws with cutoffs sometimes 100+ below general

Self-check by profile

Profile A: Single, 29, master's degree, 3 years foreign experience, English IELTS 8.5

FactorPoints
Age (29)105
Education (master's)135
English (CLB 9+)124
Foreign work experience0 (not directly scored; counts via transferability)
Skill transferability (CLB 9 + master's + 3 yr experience)~50
Estimated CRS~414

This profile is below typical 2026 general draw cutoffs. The likely path: get a job offer (+50), pursue PNP (+600), or improve French.

Profile B: Single, 27, PhD, 1 year Canadian work experience, English CLB 9, French CLB 7

FactorPoints
Age (27)110
Education (PhD)150
English (CLB 9)124
Canadian work (1 year)40
French (CLB 7)50
Skill transferability~100
Estimated CRS~574

This profile is comfortably above general draw cutoffs and is competitive in French-only draws even without a nomination.

Profile C: Married, 34, bachelor's, 5 years foreign experience, English CLB 8

FactorPoints
Age (34)84
Education (bachelor's)112
English (CLB 8)92
Spouse factors~20
Skill transferability~50
Estimated CRS~358

Below cutoffs. PNP is essentially required, or improving English to CLB 9+ and pursuing French.

Recent CRS cutoffs (2026 trends)

Draw typeTypical 2026 cutoff
General510-540
CEC-only490-525
PNP-only720-790 (because of the +600)
French-only410-470
Healthcare occupations460-510
STEM occupations470-520
Trades occupations430-480

Category-based draws (introduced 2023) for healthcare, STEM, trades, transport, agriculture, and French speakers have substantially expanded access for those profiles.

Step-by-step to entering the pool

1. Get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

If your education is outside Canada, get an ECA from a designated organisation (WES, ICAS, IQAS, CES, ICES). Takes 6-20 weeks. Required for FSW.

2. Take a language test

IELTS General Training, CELPIP, TEF (French), or TCF (French). Aim for CLB 9+ in English to maximise CRS. Results are valid for 2 years.

3. Create an Express Entry profile

Submit your profile online. Your CRS score is calculated immediately. You enter the pool the moment your profile is complete.

4. Wait for a draw (or pursue a nomination)

Draws happen roughly weekly. If your CRS clears the cutoff, you receive an ITA. If not, work on raising your score (or pursue a PNP).

5. Submit a complete application

After receiving an ITA, you have 60 days to submit a complete PR application. Processing typically takes 5-7 months.

Common mistakes

Not maximising language scores. Going from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in English adds substantial CRS β€” often 50+ points. The test costs $300 and weeks of preparation. The math overwhelmingly favours retaking.

Ignoring French. French at CLB 7+ adds up to 50 points and unlocks French-only draws with dramatically lower cutoffs. Learning French to CLB 7 is feasible in 12-18 months and is one of the most cost-effective CRS upgrades.

Missing category-based draws. Health, STEM, trades, agriculture, transport, and French categories have dramatically lower cutoffs. Make sure your NOC code maps you into one if you qualify.

Treating PNP as plan B. For sub-470 profiles, PNP is plan A. Identify the province where your occupation is in demand and apply directly.

Letting the profile expire. Profiles last 12 months. If you don't receive an ITA in that window, you re-enter (with new scores, new ECA if needed).

FAQ

What CRS do I need in 2026?

For general draws, plan for 510+ to be competitive. Category-based draws can be lower. PNP holders effectively need ~75-150 base + 600 nomination.

Does a job offer help?

Yes. A valid LMIA-supported job offer adds 50 points (or 200 for senior management). LMIA-exempt job offers also count under some circumstances. A job offer alone rarely bridges the gap from ~450 to ~520 without other moves.

How long does Express Entry take?

After an ITA, IRCC processes complete PR applications in ~5-7 months on average. Total time from creating a profile to landing as a PR is typically 8-14 months.

Can my spouse's profile help?

Yes β€” spouse education, language, and Canadian experience all add points (up to ~40). It also matters which spouse is the principal applicant β€” calculate both ways.

Does Express Entry guarantee PR?

Receiving an ITA doesn't guarantee PR β€” you still need to pass the substantive application (medical, security, evidence). But ITA holders who file complete, truthful applications are approved at very high rates.
